My Keyboard Shortcuts Guide

So you can type fast… How can you become a more efficient computer user?

Two words: Keyboard Shortcuts.

How to read the shortcuts listed in this tutorial:

Where a plus sign (+) separates the keystrokes, hold the first one or more down, then press the latter.
Where a comma (,) separates the keystrokes, just press the keys in that order (without holding them).

Basic Window Manipulation Keyboard Shortcuts: (Windows 95 and up)

  • Alt, Space, X = Maximizes current window.
  • Alt, Space, N = Minimizes current window.
  • Alt, Space, R = Restores current window to original un-maximized state.
  • Alt + F4 OR Alt, Space, C OR Alt, F, X = Close current window.
  • Alt, Space, S = can now resize the window with arrow keys.
  • Alt, Space, M = can now move the window with the arrow keys.

Learning new keyboard shortcuts is easy. If youre using Windows 2000 or XP, press the Alt key to reveal keyboard shortcuts and viola! Youll now see one letter in most menus become underlined, now all you need to do is press Alt and the newly underlined letter to access the desired command.

Some of the unknown keyboard shortcuts:

  • Windows + M = Minimizes all open windows. (Can we say boss alert?)
  • Windows + F = Opens Search for files or folders (Start > Search > Find Files or Folders)
  • Windows + E = Opens Windows Explorer
  • Windows + R = Opens Run (Start > Run)
  • Windows + D = Same as using a show desktop
  • Windows + U = Opens Utility Manager (and starts on screen narrator)
  • CTRL + Tab = Is good for navigating tabbed windows (CTRL + Shift + Tab.)
  • Alt + D (in Internet Explorer) accesses the Address Bar
  • Windows, P, I opens IE quickly (if you have no other folders in your start menu that start with I)

My personal favorite would have to be Alt + Tab (and Alt + Shift + Tab) for switching through open programs.
