Software Identity by Icon

What software package(s) are these?
This one is easy.

The next one may be a little more difficult.

Comment your answers. Comment broad guesses. The icons have been slightly distorted in the enlargement process.
I’m doing this ‘exercise’ to illustrate the importance of having an identifiable brand – not just from a marketing viewpoint, but from a user [...]

Site Resolutions

The Bofe Blog has been receiving some much needed TLC over my holiday break from school/work. In 2005, I hope to accomplish these goals with the site:

Write more betterer – clear, articulate, and well-thought out entries
Increase reader involvement – I’m working on revamping comment display
Contribute original content – less blogsphere echoing
Redesign the blog – keep [...]

Happy Holidays

In the spirit of last year’s entry here’s another photo of my niece and I:

I hope everyone’s had a safe holiday. And yes, I had a ‘right’ glove on my left hand. I had two right hand gloves on that day. Damn mongolians.

Knee Deep in Snow

UPDATE: The final toll was 15-17 inches. We had thunder and lightning during the snowstorm.
This snow storm is shaping up to be the most snow I’ve seen in over 10 years.
I’m loving every second of it.
Here’s a couple of photos that were taken around 12:30 this afternoon.

Tweaking 404s for Gallery

Expounding on my already brilliant handling of 404 errors, I’ve decided to take it a step further.
The default search is still running through MT(Movable Type) to see if there’s a blog entry that mentions the words in the URL except for when there’s an image file extension (.png, .jpg, .gif)
So, if you go to [...]

Santy A running wild

UPDATE: The great Google has squashed Santy A from getting anywhere.
PHP and phpBB have been getting a lot of scrutiny lately because of flaws that have been exploited causing websites to be defaced.
I run two installations of phpBB – one on racerband.com and the other on MSUR. Luckily, I have a co-admin who patched [...]

The little things in life…

For those of us who’ve been doing HTML for years, it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. The label tag is one of those ‘new’ tricks even though it’s been around forever.

Case 1 (The old way):
Remember My Username and Password

Case 2 (The new and improved way):
Remember My Username and Password

Here’s [...]

Frostbite Update

I’m on a nice schedule of getting a completely new computer every four years. My current machine is named ‘shockandawe’ – the machine I’m building now is going to be named Frostbite. It’s taken some saving, but I’ve managed to get some vital components put together so far – and I’m slowly finalizing [...]

Idea: XUS

…from the bofe / Clayton labs.
The eXploit Update Service could provide up to the minute updates for system administrators – but only the updates that are critical to the sysadmin’s daily operations.
The service allows syadmins to sign up making selections about the software, threshold, and delivery methods.

A site like SecurityFocus already has their software [...]

Snipping and Tablet PCs

Since I’ve finally figured out how to use Microsoft’s Snipping Tool for the Tablet PC, I have a suggestion or two to offer. I realize the software is in early stages of development, so I hope these are helpful suggestions.
I’m a stickler for efficiency. I have my HP Tablet customized so I can use it [...]
